October chillis

The weather in September was very kind to my chillis. It was warm and dry almost throughout the month - ideal weather for ripening chillis. Since they are growing in pots, keeping them sufficiently watered is not too much of a problem. Sometimes wet and windy weather puts paid to my chillis before all their fruit has ripened, but I don't think that will be the case this year.

In the basket this time are two types of Sweet Pepper, nine types of chilli and one which is about half-and-half (the "Piment d'Espelette, which is a large but very mild chilli).

Sweet Peppers: "King of the North" and an unknown one I call simply "Turkish Sweet Pepper".
Chillis: "Ohnivec", "Jalapeno", "Ring of Fire", "Red Habanero", "Aji Limon", "Demon Red", "Explosive Embers", Nosferatu", and an unidentified one nicknamed "Turkish Small Red".

It took me ages to get some photographs of these with which I was reasonably happy. The chillis are so shiny that you get loads of unwanted reflections. And No, I do not polish them!

Most of the ones in the photos have now joined the others in the airing-cupboard, where they are drying for Winter storage. If I get enough I may make a chilli garland to hang in the kitchen.

  1. Lovely chilies. When I grew them I used to make a garland every year. I loved they way they looked in the kitchen.

  2. King if the North has been really good for us but are yours pointy?

    1. Sue, yes, mine have been pointy - but then I suspect that that is an unusual aberration caused by the compost problems. The plant and its fruits have also been much smaller than I had expected.

  3. Shiny peppers are not the easiest things to photograph, your photos and peppers look lovely. Eggplant (aubergines) are even more difficult to photograph, the contrast is so extreme. I notice that you don't grow eggplant, do you not like them or perhaps they are difficult to grow in your climate?

    1. Hi Michelle; Yes, you are right, we are not so fond of aubergines. With so little space available I tend to concentrate more on the things we like better. I did grow some in 2012, and they did reasonably well, but in general they don't do well outdoors in the UK.

  4. All the different varieties look really attractive when grouped together like this showing off their different colours and shapes.

  8. Great chillies, do you over winter yours as I find this the best way for a decent harvest following years.

    1. I have overwintered a few. Most of them have done OK (certainly earlier to produce fruit than ones started from seed), but some have not survived.
