Chillis - the Grand Finale

I have picked the last chillis of the year. The two "Turkey" chilli plants that I had been keeping in the garage have been consigned to the compost bin. But, wow, did they go out with a blaze of glory! I couldn't resist according them a final photo opportunity...

Just for the record (since this was a vegetable harvest as well as a photo-shoot), this bowlful weighed-in at 170g. Not a lot in terms of weight, but with a good strong chilli a little bit goes a long way.

So now I have the usual dilemma. Cook them immediately? Freeze them? Dry them? Make oil with them? Not sure. Maybe a bit of all of the above...

  1. They look great. I never use chillies in cooking, but I have grown them, just for the fact that they look so good. They didn't get wasted, I gave them to Hubby's cousin who can't get enough of them.

  4. That's a lot of chillies. One of our gardening magazines is conspiring with you and has given free chilli seeds this month - hot ones too!

  6. You have quite a harvest there Mark, I didn't weigh Mikes chilli harvest but there were at three large bowls full at the last count, more still to come. He wants to grow more next year. HELP!!! A lot of chilli sauce was made for him & his friends. Chilli oil for topping pizza & we also made our own hot sauce. (Tabasco style).

  7. Great harvest Mark. I made sambal oelek with many of my chillies last year and I'm still using it. For me with non chilli eaters in the family it is an easy way for me to add it to my food but not theirs. I haven't frozen chillies before, do you thaw them before using them? Chop them first?

    1. Hi Liz; it is easier to chop frozen chillis before they defrost. They do lose much of their texture when frozen, but when you use them in cooked food that's not really a problem. They are no good for salads and salsas though.

  8. I can't believe you will get through all those chillies in one year. I still have dried ones left from three years ago! My new favourite food is chilli jam.

  11. Beautiful! What ever you do make them last. Freeze is a good stop gap! My window cill yielded a good couple of kilo's plus what I picked along the way. Take a quick visit to my blog and there may be a treat on it's way to you!
