What a difference some sunshine makes!

In the UK in January, sunshine is a fairly rare commodity, so when we get it we must savour its full potential. Following the big storms of earlier in the week, we got a nice sunny (and still) day on Saturday.

Here are some photos of plants in my garden given a bit of a "lift" by that sunshine.

Perpetual Spinach

Raspberry - "Autumn Bliss" (yes, photo taken in January, not October!)

Catalogna chicory

Purple Sprouting Broccoli

Chicory - type not known

Olive

Autumn Cherry "Surbhitella"

Herr Jeeves, the cane-topper, sun-bathing this time

Wallflower

OK, it's not warm sunshine like we (allegedly) get in the Summer-time, but at least it lightens the gloom for an hour or two.

  1. Hey! It really does look warm! Nice plants! My raspberries just finished about ten days ago after my grandaughters made quick work out of the last ones.
    Is that an olive tree?

  2. Yes, that sunshine certainly makes things look good and me feel better. We've still got Autumn Rasberries, I did cut back the main group but there are a few dotted around here and there and I've noticed a few berries on them, the birds soon notice them too!

  3. We had a pleasant (rain free) day on Saturday too. Still getting some autumn raspberries? Wow! Herr Jeeves looks like he's enjoying the day too :) Cheers, Jenni

  8. It does make you feel a lot better when the sun comes out and shows off your veg a treat. You just have to make the most of these little opportunities as they are so fleeting.

  11. I remember getting really excited when the sun came out in winter, especially so in the UK - it does make a huge difference to mood, even your plants seem to think so.

  12. What is this thing you call 'sunshine'?
I'm envying you your chicory plants.
I enjoyed your raspberry comment on my blog. If you pop back you'll see what my thoughts are on our supposed superiority.

  13. It certainly lifts the spirits when we see a bit of sun, even if it is only fleeting.

  14. We have some early raspberries fruiting on the plot - only a few berries that are turning mouldy in the damp - hope this doesn't put them off fruiting when they are supposed to!

  15. Is that lungwort in the background of the last pic?

  16. David; Yes it is - just a tiny "volunteer" though. Hadn't the heart to dig it up, so I'm hoping it will survive where it is.

  18. Your photos are wonderful! Sunshine definitely made them look better but I'm at the variety of food that you grow!

  19. Thanks Kanak; If you saw my post the other day called "Gardening tips for beginners" you will have understood that my policy is to grow a little of lots rather than lots of a little (if you see what I mean). So I only ever have a few specimens of each type - which perhaps creates the illusion that I have row upon row of veggies!

  20. We've had sun since Friday apart from some cloud on Sunday and it makes me feel so good and so positive. Lovely to see all of your produce going strong.
