Chilli showcase

Most of my chilli plants are beginning to produce ripe fruit now, so I think it is the right moment to show you some photos of them...

"Red Habanero"

Sweet Pepper "Garnet"

Those "Garnet" peppers are huge - about 20cm long. They are not showing any signs of ripeness yet, so I reckon I may have to cut them and bring them indoors to ripen.

You probably noticed that many of the photos of chillis show moisture on the fruits. This is dew. I took the photos at about 0900 on a sunny morning, after a cool night. Really Autumny!

  1. The dews are quite heavy now aren't they?

    How many of each chilli have you potted up? I bet they make a lovely display. Do you keep many as decorative pot plants?

    1. In most cases I have only one example of each, and they are all in pots. If space allows, I will keep one or two indoors for next year (as I did last year with the Scotch Bonnet), but mostly I begin again each year, growing from seed.

    The dark purple 'Nosferatu' is so interesting with dark leaves and reddish stems.

    1. David, this is one that I only acquired recently, and the plant only has about 6 fruits. I'm leaving them to ripen (hopefully they will be red), at which point I will be able to guage the heat level.

  6. I love the yellow and purple ones, great names too. What will you do with them all? Be nice to dry them.

    1. Caroline, I'm keeping the bigger ones for drying so that I can make some "paprika", whereas the smaller ones are for general culinary purposes - some of them are already in the freezer for use later on. Chillis do actually last pretty well in the freezer.

  9. You have some really interesting chili plants like the black prince. I read an article just this morning about putting chilis on a toothache as a cure and a method people used to practice years ago.
