I am no longer forced to make do with just one or two spears of Asparagus; I'm now picking millions of spears!
Well, OK, maybe not millions, but more than the odd one or two.
The Asparagus harvest in England this year has been very sparse, we are told, because of the strange weather conditions. Most of the Asparagus fields were flooded-out at just the critical time, so most of what is on sale in our shops is still from Peru. No problems with drainage in my raised beds though - even in the wettest of weather they drain really well.
Here's what I harvested yesterday. My nine plants are never going to produce a glut, but this is certainly a worthwhile harvest.
Now, where's the butter...?
Looks brilliant! Personally I've had to buy my asparagus in the supermarket today, but they are at least local and I will have them dressed with finely chopped hard-boiled eggs and a simple vinaigrette...
ReplyDeleteAsparagus is one thing we don't grow. WE thought we didn't like it until we had some at a friends.
ReplyDeletereally showing off now... and no-one likes a show off do they? to make up for it all you have to do is send a bunch to me....
ReplyDeleteDom; When I have too much for our own needs, you'll be first on the list for getting the spares! :)
DeleteOh yum. I think next year I'll get a little bit. It will take a few more years to ramp up though. I so love asparagus.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful asparagus harvest, Mark! Enjoy them! I have to buy mine at the grocer,too....don't think they grow in the tropics!!
ReplyDeleteLooks great to me! I'll be pretty happy if mine ever produce that much.
ReplyDeleteYay! I am envious.
ReplyDeleteBut I have just decided on a spot where I can plant some myself so I'm excited. It is only a small patch so I'm wondering how much room you have for your nine plants?
VG: My asparagus plants take up one whole raised bed - that is 1 metre x 2.4 metres. Any amount of asparagus is good, so even if you only have room for two or three plants, I urge you to have a try with it.
DeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat's good news! While the whole country has to eat imported asparagus you have them fresh from your garden. You must feel really proud of your plants and that very well draining raised bed.
ReplyDeleteNice harvest! How are you cooking them?
ReplyDeleteThere's certainly enough there for a meal, more than just a meagre taste. It looks great too.
ReplyDeleteI never knew that asparagus could be so artistic ~ or is that due to the photographer?
ReplyDeleteI've always fancied growing asparagus but never tried...you are obviously the expert. Well done ;D
Nice photos - shame about the subject matter. I've tried to like asparagus, I really have but to no avail.
ReplyDeleteNice asparagus Mark!! Here in SA too we've had some strange looking asparagus in the shops. Very skinny spears and pretty expensive too. Obviously good drainage is the answer. Farmers take note!!! Enjoy them .... lol x
ReplyDeleteI saw asparagus, first time, in USA.Though we have millions of vegetarian population, this vegetable is not native to our country, nor it is part of our diet!
ReplyDeleteSoooo impressed. And jealous too! those spears look just to die for.
