Miscellany

Just now I don't have a huge amount of veg in my garden to blog about, so I have put together this little collection of "miscellaneous" subjects...

Firstly, the seed-head of a Dandelion, covered in tiny droplets of water, on a foggy day. This one was photographed at the same time as all those fungi I showed you.

Dandelion

A spider's web, stretched between the legs of a garden chair. Remind me to tell her off for making an irregular web.  If she wants to put it in my garden, it needs to be neater! :-)

The other day Esther Montgomery asked me in a comment whether the white Dogwood berries were the same as Snowberries, and I said "No". Well, during my Fungus Foray a few days ago I saw these in a hedgerow, which I believe are Symphoricarpos, aka Snowberries.

Snowberries

Caterpillar. This photo has been zoomed, because I was trying to identify the object on the caterpillar's back. I still don't know what it is. Do you? Could it be a tiny snail? It seems to have a sort of square base, which looks really odd. Let me know if you think you have the answer.

This is a photo of my Prunus Autumnalis, which seems to be heeding the encouragement to produce more flowers that I gave it.[Photo taken 19 Nov.]

  1. The cobweb is gorgeous...and interesting that you're also being visited by caterpillars. I recently found a large green one crawling away from some veg I'd just brought back from the allotment. Don't they know that tomorrow is December?!

  2. Mark, please don't chide that spider. She's woven a beautiful web.:) Loved all the miscellaneous pictures.

  3. My boys like to blow the dandelion seed-head. So I think it will forever remain in our garden.

  5. Nice flowers on the Prunus Autumalis - that's an interesting effect on the photo - how did you achieve it?

  6. Liz; All my photos for the blog are uploaded into Google's Picasa Web Albums, in which there is an editing suite called Picasa, which I frequently use. The Cherry Blossom photo uses an effect called "Vignette" which softens the edges and highlights the centre of your picture.

  7. It's hard to tell what it is hitching a ride on the caterpillar but I haven't seen a baby snail that colour and as you say the square bit at the bottom is strange.

As for the spider's web isn't it based on fibonacci so it couldn't be symmetrical!

  8. Sue, you're blinding me with science again. I have no idea what a fibonacci is, so I'll have to go and look that one up! :-)

  9. I was just showing off really! A snail shell is based on the same mathematical principle as are lots and lots of things in nature. Magic!

  10. Neat photos. The book I said I'd get back to you on is called "Secret of Fat Free Baking" by Sandra Woodruff. It uses honey, banana, applesauce etc to sweeten breads, muffins, cakes etc. I use it to bake & turns out really good.

  11. Hi Kelli; Thanks for the info on the book. Jane has to be really careful with what she eats, being diabetic, but she has quickly learned how to balance things out and maintain a stable blood-sugar level. Most things are allowed if they are counter-balanced by something else, she has found, so small quantities of sugar or honey are OK in the right circumstances.

  12. Liz; Sorry, the photo-editing suite is called Picnik, not Picasa...
