I say "them", but I really mean "it", because I have only one plant. That said, it looks a good one.
For want of space elsewhere, I'm growing my courgette in a big (50cm diameter) tub.
Actually I think growing courgettes in tubs is an ideal way to do it, because it means that it is easier to provide the right environment for them - they like deep, rich, moisture-retentive soil. They thrive in full sunlight as long as they are kept well watered. When grown in dry soil, courgettes get stressed and succumb easily to mildew.
My plant is just producing its first fruit:
Not far behind are at least two more embryonic fruits.
I just hope that some male flowers open at the right time to permit pollination.
Sharing the big tub with the courgette plant are two cucumber plants - one "Diva" and one "Passandra". They are still small, but I have started encouraging them to climb up the bamboo canes I have provided for them.
Initially they need tying-in, but eventually they will probably be able to support themselves with the aid of their spiral tendrils.
Your courgette looks happy in its tub, it'll be wonderful when they start coming in. We've just begun harvesting ours, although the first few fruits were definitely not pollinated.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine with a large garden showed me a delicious trick for courgettes. He picks them when they are still fairly small and thin with the flower attached, cleans them, rubs with oil and a sprinkle of salt and roasts them till tender. So delicious!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the courgette - I hope that it performs for you. I've never had the mountains of fruit that others have had so I need a few plants in my garden just to get an "ok" supply.
ReplyDeleteDiva certainly is popular. I'm trying it as well, a 2nd time. Last year, all of my Diva seedlings died so I never did up with any fruit.
We picked our first courgettes today.
ReplyDeleteThey are my favourite veg plants courgette and cucumber :-)
ReplyDeleteYours look nice and healthy. We've eaten our first couple of courgettes, but I reckon I've got about another week until the cucumbers are in full production.
I love your idea of the cut down plastic bottle over the edge of the tub, yet another use for my mass of empty bottles :-)
Looks so healthy! I have tried on growing courgette for several time, but have never success yet. Do you add lots of compost in the soil?
