An unidentified chilli

Earlier this year a friend gave me some chilli plants. One of them has developed into this:

The trouble is, no-one seems to know what variety it is. It was given to me in good faith as "Purple Gusto", but it is evidently not that. "Purple Gusto" has long, pointed fruits, but the fruits on mine are bulbous. Some of them are a light "plum" colour like this:

Others are much darker, like this:

Someone suggested this might be "Cheiro Roxa", but I think not, although there is some similarity.

Whatever this is, it's a very attractive chilli! I haven't tried eating any of the fruits yet, so I can't comment on the taste or heat. In fact I will struggle to tell when they are ripe. Perhaps they will turn red or something?

If you recognise this chilli / pepper, please tell me in a comment!

  1. Could it be a 'Filius Blue Chilli Pepper?' Turning red when ripe.

    1. No, I don't think so. The fruits are a different shape, and mine hang downwards whereas Filius Blue fruits point upwards. Also the leaves are a completely different colour.

  2. Don't know why but having a hard time posting. How large ar the peppers now and what color was the flower? Was the pepper at first stage purple or green? They look a bit like black scorpions tongues...

    1. The fruits have been purple from the beginning. The biggest ones are about the size of a table-tennis ball.

  3. Sorry I see now the flowers are white... Cheiro Roxa is another that comes to mind... I won't give up until I find it lol

  4. I suppose what you may have is a cross of Purple Gusto and something else. One more than one occasion I've grown a pepper that doesn't come true, even from reliable seed sources. I'm going to guess that it will be red when ripe.

    1. I think you are probably right on both counts, Michelle.

  5. It looks like a habanero shape. Very beautiful in any case.

  6. I don't have a clue what it might be, but it is striking whatever it is!

  7. No idea either - I was actually going to say the same thing as Michelle, in that's it's a cross, especially as purple isn't exactly a common colour when it comes to peppers.

  8. I bought some gusto purple from the garden centre and kept 2 and gave some to friends. One of the plants produced chillis just like this. They all looked exactly the same though as plants. We wondered if there was a slight mutation or envirobmental factor that made them different.
