Some may even go directly into the ground at the end of May as a couple of varieties were very finicky germinators and I had to start again, so those have only just poked through the soil.

I have the same complaint about traditional pots - too much width and not enough depth. I use coffee cups that I collect throughout the year instead - they are much taller than they are wide, but still top out at about 15cm in height. This is often enough, though, to get that deep planting up to the first true leaves.Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15949946977793864054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-28406536078508346152016-05-02T13:07:23.697+01:002016-05-02T13:07:23.697+01:00I'm following you progress with great interest...I'm following you progress with great interest this year, Mark.
I have been growing veg on and off for a certain amount of years, but would you believe I never knew that tomatoes should be repotted deeper.
My young plants haven't been outside much. It is either too windy or too cold. Or both.
I'm grateful for your hints and tips.Patricia (La Chatte Gitane)https://www.blogger.com/profile/03188119208339437700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-21225394570600903612016-05-02T12:28:26.797+01:002016-05-02T12:28:26.797+01:00I tend to knock a little of the soil off the roots...I tend to knock a little of the soil off the roots when transplanting tomato plants so that it allows room to plant them deeper in their new pots. I'm very late this year, my tomato seeds are only just germinating, I seem to have lost a bit of my gardening mojo since giving up the allotment. It will be a late harvest this year so I'm thinking of buying a couple of plants, just to have some tomatoes ready earlier than these I'm growing from seed will be.Johttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17436932004631816039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-69825315400522732812016-05-02T12:28:06.945+01:002016-05-02T12:28:06.945+01:00Ours are still at seedling stage.Ours are still at seedling stage.Sue Garretthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164518448098182276noreply@blogger.com
