Have you tried Duo Minarettes with two varieties on one tree? The cut in the picture just below "...Hi Mark,

The cut in the picture just below "I cut back any straggly spurs to just above a bud, like this" looks a bit too horizontal - I seem to recall pruning advice somewhere saying to avoid this as it can be more likely to lead to disease (something to do with water pooling on it maybe?). Or maybe it's not horizontal and just the angle of the picture, in which case, move along, nothing to see here!

Also: nice blog - just come across it and it's an enjoyable read.

Dave.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-62348690234944245602012-02-15T15:58:44.478+00:002012-02-15T15:58:44.478+00:00Interesting, I've not come across that method ...Interesting, I've not come across that method of growing fruit trees - hope your apple responds to your pact and rewards you with lovely fruit this year.Janet/Plantaliscioushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15605580157193047780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-33596283795492706722012-02-13T14:59:35.563+00:002012-02-13T14:59:35.563+00:00Howard; my expertise in respect of fruit trees is ...Howard; my expertise in respect of fruit trees is extremely limited! They are about fifteen years old now and largely flushed out with hardly pruned growth. Do you think that if I try to cut them back now to a sort of minaret style they'd survive?Howard the Plumberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04804369488820016150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-39806093965405221072012-02-13T14:38:01.459+00:002012-02-13T14:38:01.459+00:00Well, no way I could the pruning at this time. I've got a cherry tree in a half barrel and I got a great crop last year, I'm hoping for the same again this year. I've been pondering buying an apple tree and had a look at a local nursery a couple of weeks ago. I decided that I would take the plunge and then the snow came, so I'm going to go pick one up soon. I'm going to grow that in a container too.Johttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17436932004631816039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-70089244949711260622012-02-13T12:02:17.136+00:002012-02-13T12:02:17.136+00:00Hi Anthony, and welcome. Have you cut the top of the main trunk? I was wondering whether to cut mine as its getting quite tall. Suppose I need to do a bit more research. Your apple tree in 2010 looked great; fingers crossed for 2012. P.S. Really enjoyed the snow pictures earlier in the week.
