I grow mine in raised beds and containers over 2 feet high as the root fly are supposed not to fly that high. It seems to work but means I have to water them a bit more than I'd like.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-8706179731376993422015-09-11T14:53:26.447+01:002015-09-11T14:53:26.447+01:00Those look wonderful! To me, carrots are one of those things that taste like a different vegetable when homegrown as compared to store bought. So sweet and tender-crispy.Jane Stronghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05016381279699618539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-57584667415208658592015-09-10T15:01:00.776+01:002015-09-10T15:01:00.776+01:00Your carrots look great. I probably should have done it sooner as the crowding likely slowed down their growth and I'm getting a bit worried that they won't size up before we get our first frost.Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15949946977793864054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-55558712647101405772015-09-10T13:32:14.845+01:002015-09-10T13:32:14.845+01:00I've read that recent research shows manured g...I've read that recent research shows manured ground does not cause forked growth in carrots and parsnips - which is just as well because I've always manured my whole allotment and then sown the seeds anyway.Spade and Daggerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03447641240079673493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3840827850297141825.post-22782561324336606652015-09-10T12:46:06.240+01:002015-09-10T12:46:06.240+01:00I've found growing in sandy soil easier than g...I've found growing in sandy soil easier than growing in clay soil. You do have to water more often and you need to add plenty of organic matter so your fertilizer will stick around rather than wash away. My current soil is on the sandy side though not really too sandy. My first garden decades ago was almost pure sand. They look brilliant, and as you say, I think carrots will be on the menu for some time yet. As for the forked roots, at least they're still usable.Johttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17436932004631816039noreply@blogger.com
