Harvest Monday - Broccoli again!

During the Winter months I have not had much to show off for Harvest Monday (hosted by Daphne at Daphne's Dandelions), but finally my Purple Sprouting Broccoli is in full swing, so I'm back in again!

This past week I harvested a batch of 40 spears of broccoli. I don't usually weigh my harvests, but I can tell you this is a lot of broccoli by my standards. I reckon 5 spears is a serving, so 40 spears will feed the two of us four times.

I wrote about harvesting PSB last week, and offered a few views about cooking it, so this time my post is confined to showing off the current batch in photo form.

Even if I didn't like eating PSB, I reckon it is picturesque enough to put it in a vase and treat it as a flower!

  2. What a great harvest, plenty there for the two of you. Can you imagine what that lot would cost in the supermarket, it's so expensive.

  4. Not only will that broccoli be delicious, but as a decorative element in the home, you can't beat it!!I love it in that little pitcher; I happen to have a beautiful little pitcher too, that was a nice gift, and this gives me a new idea for it! Double thanks, Mark!

    1. Egretta, you're welcome! Maybe you should paint a picture of it?

  5. You're doing it again and giving me broccoli envy - this year the pigeons decimated our plants.

    1. Funnily enough, although I have been growing PSB for many years, the pigeons have only attacked it once. I had it covered in nets as usual, but that one year the blessed birds landed on the netting and ate the PSB through the holes in the net!

  6. I think I'll give this PSB a try in my garden; you've convinced me.

  7. Mark, your photos are making me very envious - PSB is my favourite veg, there's always some in the fridge (supermarket bought). Last year I grew it in the garden but didn't resow for this year. ... I have now! Great top photo!

  10. Mine have also started producing again after their very unseasonal initial burst in the summer.Having looked at your photos I think that I'll leave them to develop a bit more rather than cut them as very small shoots.
A couple of the plants have lots of spears with whitish patches. Not sure if this is a disease or how they taste yet.

  11. Hmmm I will have to go back and look at how you cook it as although I think it looks really pretty it just takes too long for my levels of patience to bear. Perhaps I could have one plant though.....

  12. That is a goodly amount of shoots you harvested and the broccoli is definitely as pretty to look at as I am sure it is tasty to eat.
